Welcome to the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) Institutional Repositories Pilot Project Harvester. This Harvester is the search service for the CARL Institutional Repositories Pilot Project and aggregates material from each of the participating Canadian institutions, allowing users to seamlessly search all of the repositories at once, using one common point of access.

The purpose of the Pilot Project is to increase the accessibility of Canadian scholarly material. Currently, Canadian research output is published and distributed in extremely diverse platforms and formats. As well, the majority of Canadian research output is published outside of Canada, with its institutional and national origins concealed. The CARL Institutional Repository Pilot Project aims to increase the visibility of Canadian researchers and universities through the implementation of repositories at a number of Canadian institutions.

An institutional repository (IR) is a digital collection of a university’s intellectual output. It centralizes, preserves, and makes accessible the knowledge generated by an academic institution. Institutional repositories also form part of a larger global system of repositories, which are indexed in a standardized way and freely accessible to anyone with an Internet connection, providing the foundation for a new model of scholarly publishing.

While the project is in its initial stages, the ultimate vision is to create a number of content-rich repositories, which are interoperable and form the basis of a larger archive of Canadian research output. For more information about the CARL Institutional Repositories Pilot Project, please visit the CARL Institutional Repositories Online Resource Portal (www.carl-abrc.ca/projects/ir External Link).

Contact: doks@khk.be

DoKS (Document and Knowledge Sharing application) wants to provide a tool that makes it easy to store, share and find documents (and information in general) across the Internet.

About the project
The focus of this project is the easy retrieval of theses from Flemish Institutes for Higher Education. Therefore software is developed to allow students to submit their theses and make them accessible via the Internet. We expect however that later on this software will also find its way into knowledge management, document management and e-learning.

The project fits in a broader context of national and international initiatives aiming to make theses and dissertations freely available world-wide. In this framework they are called ETD's (Electronic Theses and Dissertations). Standards and protocols were taken into account to guarantee interoperability (Open Archives Initiative, Dublin Core, ...). Besides all this, some research was done concerning file formats (XML, PDF, ...), digital preservation, information retrieval and copyright.

DoKS, formally known as the HOBU-project 'Digital Library containing Theses from Flemish Institutes for Higher Education', is an initiative of the library of the Katholieke Hogeschool Kempen. The project is realized in collaboration with the library of the KULeuven and other partners, and it is funded by the Flemish institute for the promotion of innovation through science and technology (IWT).

Service Home External Link     Last checked on: 3/8/2006
PubMed Central is a digital archive of life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), developed and managed by NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine (NLM). With PubMed Central, NLM is taking the lead in preserving and maintaining unrestricted access to the electronic literature, just as it has done for decades with the printed biomedical literature. PubMed Central aims to fill the role of a world class library in the digital age. It is not a journal publisher. NLM believes that giving all users free and unrestricted access to the material in PubMed Central is the best way to ensure the durability and utility of the archive as technology changes over time.

We are promoting open access to the research literature pre- and post-peer-review through author self-archiving in institutional eprint archives. Open access to research maximises research access and thereby also research impact, making research more productive and effective. This registry has two functions: (1) to monitor overall growth in the number of eprint archives and (2) to maintain a list of GNU EPrints sites (the software Southampton University has designed to facilitate self-archiving).

Scirus distinguishes itself from existing search engines by concentrating on scientific content only and by searching both web and (often proprietary) databases. Search engines generally index the web by letting a robot crawl websites. However, a lot of information on the Web is invisible to search engines, because they are either not allowed on the site or are technically not capable of crawling them. Sixty percent of the information on the Web is thought to be"invisible"in this way. Scirus' aim is to provide scientists with one comprehensive search platform covering both the web and the normally"invisible"databases.

For more information, please see http://www.scirus.com/about/.

Scirus is the most comprehensive science-specific search engine on the Internet. Driven by the latest search engine technology, Scirus searches over 250 million science-specific Web pages, enabling you to quickly

Sheet Music Consortium
Service Home External Link     Service Description External Link     5 Known Data Providers     Last checked on: 9/22/2006 8:24:00 PM
The Sheet Music Consortium is a group of libraries working toward the goal of building an open collection of digitized sheet music using the Open Archives Initiative:Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. Harvested metadata about sheet music in participating collections is hosted by the UCLA Digital Library Program, which provides an access service via this metadata to sheet music records at the host libraries. Member institutions and data providers have chosen to catalog their sheet music in different ways, but a very large proportion of the original sheets in participating collections has been digitized, allowing users direct access to the music itself and - in many cases - covers and advertisements that offer evidence of the cultural context in which the songs were published.
